There has recently been contention regarding our policy for headless fursuiters at NordicFuzzCon. First, we are sorry that our policy has caused offence.

Second, we would like to explain our intentions with this policy. A key element to NFC has always been the (visual) atmosphere of being immersed in a furry fantasy wonderland with your friends. Consequently, our approach has always been to gently try and keep headless fursuiters away from public view, even though this has not been clearly articulated in our written rules in previous years. For next year, we have chosen to add this policy to our code of conduct.

That said, we realise that the convention experience is made up of (among other elements) both atmosphere and how an attendee feels. In other words, people should BE safe and also FEEL safe – including safe in taking off their fursuit heads if they need to do so. We want to discourage that people are headless unless they have a reason, but we also want to discourage being impolite towards people who are headless.

Third, while some of the contention has been due to differences in personal opinions and preferences, other parts of the discussion have been based on unclear communication or insufficient information. Therefore, we would like to provide some clarifications:
  • Safety always comes first. Our rules should never jeopardise your health, and you should never be afraid to seek out assistance or just take your head off – preferably long before any real issues occur.
  • NFC Security isn’t the fursuit police! No one will be banned from the convention for going headless; bans are reserved for the most serious offences only. If we see someone without their fursuit head on, our first concern will be for the fursuiter. We don't expect attendees or staff to put pressure on headless fursuiters – at most, you will be given a friendly reminder of our code of conduct.
  • We will create additional “headless zones” in the public convention space, which are secluded areas where both suiters and non-suiters are allowed, and where fursuiters can take off their fursuit heads when they wish. We will try to make these zones as accommodating as possible.
We realise that having a mandatory checkbox in the registration system draws a great deal of attention to something that is a small aspect of the overall convention experience, and which is not relevant for every attendee. In hindsight, this was perhaps too heavy-handed. Although the policy is still part of our code of conduct, this checkbox has now been removed.

Headlessness at conventions is a divisive topic in the fandom, with strong opinions and thoughtful arguments on both sides of the debate. We have listened carefully to the arguments and wishes of both sides (which is part of a larger debate in the fandom and does not solely pertain to our convention). While one cannot please everyone, we hope this statement has been helpful in clarifying the intentions, execution, and consequences of this policy.

We wish all attendees a pleasant experience at NordicFuzzCon.

Sincerely,

The NordicFuzzCon Board of Directors
Trax, Clover, Ethan, Miles, and Pinky
